The Papalote Project

For each person detained in immigration actions, an estimated additional 3.5 people are directly affected. Those affected are mothers, fathers, children and spouses. An estimated 129,000 people were placed in detention proceedings during 2012, many of them through the efforts of local law-enforcement agencies that partner with the Department of Homeland Security. Create a Papalote

  Learn how to create a papalote for the project.  Follow these instructions, but don’t attach a tail to the kite please.  You can drop off your completed Papalote at Mama’s Coffee House  (716 Main Street in Pineville)  and we will use it in an upcoming Papalote Project Workshop.

The Exhibition

The Papalote Project is currently on exhibit at the Levine Museum of the New South (200 E. Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28202.) The exhibit highlights the stories of Charlotte children who have been impacted by the deportation of one of their parents.  The exhibit, titled El Papalote Mágico (The Magic Kite), features handmade kites created by these children and is on display at Levine Museum through February 3, 2013.  Presented in conjunction with the museum’s Latino New South project,  El ...

There are many ways to volunteer with the Papalote Project. We are currently seeking bi-lingual (Spanish/English) writers to help transcribe the stories of project participants.
